RULES
& PROCEDURES
I.
Region Band Entry Procedures
A.
Auditions will follow the ATSSB Audition procedures as listed on the
ATSSB website. High School audition
music will come from the approved ATSSB list.
Middle School audition music will come from the Region Coordinator.
B.
Fees for ATSSB All-Region Band Auditions, both HS & MS are set at $12.00 per student,
per instrument. Fees for ATSSB Jazz
Band Auditions are set at $15.00 per student per instrument.
C.
The entries must be submitted online through the TMEA website according to ATSSB procedures. The
deadline for entries is set by the contest host. No late entries will be
accepted for the high school audition. Late entries will be accepted for the
middle school auditions at the discretion of the Region Coordinator.
D.
A copy of head director’s ATSSB and TMEA membership cards must be
attached to the registration form. The
registration form must be given to the contest host prior to the audition.
E.
The head junior high/middle school band director must be a paid member of
ATSSB. The high school band director’s card cannot be used unless
there is no junior high director.
F. The director is responsible for enforcing eligibility
rules on the day of the audition. Student
eligibility rules will be based on current UIL Rules of Eligibility.
G.
Directors and students are responsible for checking the list of audition
material and errata's.
H.
Fifth and sixth graders are allowed to audition for the three middle school
region bands. All seventh and eighth graders are allowed to tryout for the high
school region band. However, if a middle school student qualifies for the high
school region band and is performing with the band, an extra high school member
must be included in the band on that particular instrument.
II.
Director/Judge Responsibilities-Auditions
A.
Five judges must be used in each room for all high school auditions. For
middle school auditions only, a three-judge panel may be used if necessary.
The Region Coordinator will select the judging panel and a Chair for each room.
B.
At High School Region Auditions students must play all scales plus the
chromatic as well as 50% - 100% of each assigned etude. HS etude cuts, if
needed, will be decided by the judging panel at the start of the audition. High
school percussionist must play all 3 etudes (snare, mallet, & timpani). At Middle School Region
Auditions students must play two scales plus the chromatic and cuts from both
assigned etudes. Directors at the judges meeting prior to the auditions will
determine the cuts. Middle school students will have one minute to perform all
three scales during their audition.
C.
Students auditioning should be out of view to the judges.
At no time should the judges or students be in view of each other.
D.
There will be no vocal communication between participants and judges.
E.
Middle
school only- If the student leaves
off part of the tryout, the room chairperson will remind the student of the
omitted section as soon as he/she detects it, preferably before the student
leaves the room.
F.
All band directors from each school participating must be present to
judge, with the exception of extenuating circumstances. The Region Coordinator
must be notified well in advance if a director cannot attend the auditions.
G.
Schools are required to bring adult chaperones to all auditions to help
monitor and assist their students.
III.
Procedures for Audition
A.
At the region audition, only one student will be in the room to compete
at a time. All other students will
be quiet in the hall. Parents of
the student auditioning will not be allowed in the audition room.
B.
The warm-up will be the one breath rule.
Students may play anything appropriate that be played in one breath. The percussion warm up instructions are listed on the ATSSB
website under Auditions.
C.
Students may use their own music in the audition room.
Original music will be present at the contest site.
D. Students
may audition on as many instruments as they wish, provided an audition fee is
paid for each instrument. Students
must decide which instrument the he/she will perform on at the Region Clinic/Concert,
and will receive one patch for performing at the Clinic/Concert.
E. If
a student qualifies for Area on two instruments, the student must choose which instrument he/she will perform on at Area before the
audition results are final. The student will perform on the same instrument at the Region
Clinic/Concert that is chosen to proceed to Area Auditions.
F.
All results will not be considered official until thirty minutes after ALL
auditions and tabulations have been completed.
G.
If a director has knowledge that a student will not be able to
participate in the Region Band or at Area auditions, he/she must contact the
Region Coordinator at the earliest possible time.
H. Each
student’s director (or a qualified proxy) MUST be in attendance at the
rehearsals and auditions to assist the clinicians and assist in supervising his/her students.
IV. Student’s Rights & Responsibilities
A. Up to such time as the scales are completed, a student has the right to exit the audition room due to mechanical failure of his/her instrument and return to complete the audition after the instrument is repaired or the student locates another instrument to use. If an instrument cannot be repaired prior to the conclusion of the audition and the student is unable to continue the audition, the audition will be considered complete. If the student leaves the room after the first note of the first etude has been played, the audition will be considered complete.
B. Students have the right to an anonymous audition.
C. Students are responsible for attaining the accurate audition material.
D. Students
are responsible for reporting any mechanical problems to the monitor before
beginning the etude portion of the audition.
E. Students
are responsible to refrain from any activity that would identify themselves or
their school during the audition.

VI.
Duties of the Region Coordinator
A. Oversee
high school and middle school ATSSB All Region Band Auditions in matters such as
dates, site, judges and hosts.
B. Oversee
high school and middle school ATSSB Region Band Clinics and Concerts for matters
such as dates, site, hosts, band organizers and clinicians.
C.
Prepare the programs for the Region Band Concert.
D.
Deal with recording issues and T-Shirt & Plaque Sales.
E. Oversee
ATSSB Region Jazz Auditions/Clinic/Concert in matters pertaining to dates,
site
and hosts.
F. Communicate with members of the region.
G. Organize and set the agenda for meetings.
H. Manage the region’s finances.
I. Attend ATSSB
State Board meetings.
