Region 8 Rules and Procedures

I.  Region Band Entry Procedures

A.  Auditions will follow the ATSSB Audition procedures as listed on the ATSSB website.  High School audition music will come from the

approved ATSSB list.  Middle School audition music will come from the Region Coordinator.

B.  Fees for ATSSB All-Region Band Auditions are set at $8.00 per student, per instrument.  Fees for ATSSB Jazz Band Auditions are set at

     $15.00 per student, per instrument.

C.  The entries must be submitted online through the TMEA website according to ATSSB procedures.  The deadline for entries is 30 days

prior to contest day.  No late entries will be accepted for the high school audition.  Late entries will be accepted for the middle school

auditions at the discretion of the Region Coordinator.

D.  A copy of the head director's ATSSB and TMEA membership cards must be attached to the registration form.  The registration form

must be mailed to the Region Coordinator postmarked 30 days prior to the audition.

E.  The head junior high/middle school band director must be a paid member of ATSSB and TMEA.  The high school band director's card

cannot be used unless there is no junior high director.

F.  Directors should enter all students they believe will audition, regardless of eligibility.  The director is responsible for enforcing eligibility

rules on the day of the audition.  Student eligibility rules will be based on current UIL Rules of  Eligibility.

G.  Directors and students are responsible for checking the list of audition material and errata.

H.  Fifth and Sixth graders are allowed to audition for the two middle school region bands.  All seventh and eight graders are allowed to

audition for the high school region band.  However, if a middle school student qualifies for the high school region band and is

performing with the band, an extra high school member must be included in the band on that particular instrument.  Middle school

     students cannot qualify for area.

II. Director/Judge Responsibilities for Auditions

A.  Five judges must be used in each room for all high school auditions.  For middle school auditions only, a three-judge panel may be used if necessary.  The contest host will select a Chair for each room.

B.  For Wind Instruments:  At High School Region Auditions students must play two scales plus the chromatic as well as all of both assigned etudes.  At Middle School Region Auditions students must play two scales plus the chromatic and cuts from both assigned etudes.  Director at the judges meeting prior to the auditions will determine the cuts.  Middle school students will have one minute to perform all three scales during their audition.

C.  PERCUSSION AUDITIONS HAVE CHANGED BEGINNING 2008-2009.  A unified percussion audition will be utilized.  Each percussionist will audition with the following music:  Mallet Scales, Snare Drum Rudimental Etude, Mallet Etude, and Snare Etude.  The scales and rudimental etude will each be worth 50 points of the audition score for a total combined of 100 possible points.  Each etude played will be worth 100 points each.  This aligns with the 300 possible points as designated on the audition form and with the point total available for wind auditions.

D.  Students auditioning should be out of view to the judges.  At no time should the judges or students be in view of each other.

E.  There will be no vocal communication between participants and judges.

F.  Middle School only:  If  the student does not complete part of the audition, the room chairperson will remind the student of the omitted section as soon as he/she detects it, preferably before the student leaves the room.

G.  All band directors from each school participating must be present to judge, with the exception of extenuating circumstances.  The Region Coordinator must be notified well in advance if a director cannot attend the auditions.

H.  Schools are required to bring adult chaperones to all auditions to help monitor and assist their students.

III.  Procedures for Audition

A.  At the region audition, only one student will be in the audition room to compete at a time.  All other students will be quiet in the hall.  Parents of the student auditioning will not be allowed in the audition room

B.  The warm-up will adhere to the one breath rule.  Students may play anything appropriate that can be played in one breath.  The percussion warm-up instructions are listed on the ATSSB website under Auditions. (www.atssb.org/execsec/PercAudGuide.09.pdf)

C.  Students may use their own music in the audition room.  Original music will be provided in each room.

D.  Students may audition on as many instruments as they wish, provided an audition fee is paid for each instrument.  Students must decide which instrument he/she will perform on at the Region Clinic/Concert, and will receive one patch for performing at the Clinic/Concert.

E.  If a student qualifies for Area on two instruments, the student must choose which instrument he/she will perform on at Area before the audition results are final.  The student will perform on the same instrument at the Region Clinic/Concert that is chosen to proceed to Area Auditions.

F.  All results will not be considered official until thirty minutes after ALL auditions and tabulations have been completed.

G.  If a director has knowledge that a student will not be able to participate in the Region Band or at Area auditions, he/she must contact the Region Coordinator at the earliest possible time.

H.  Each student's director (or a qualified proxy) MUST be in attendance at the auditions and rehearsals to assist in supervising students and/or assist the clinicians.

IV.  Student's Rights and Responsibilities

A.  Up to such time as the scales are completed, a student has the right to exit the audition room due to mechanical failure of his/her instrument and return to complete the audition after the instrument is repaired or the student locates another instrument to use.  If an instrument cannot be repaired prior to the conclusion of the audition and the student is unable to continue the audition, the audition will be considered complete.  If the student leaves the room after the first note of the first etude has been played, the auditions will be considered complete.
