Dear Director:

Area auditions will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2007 at Lubbock-Cooper High School, Woodrow, Texas. Lubbock Cooper High School is located south of Lubbock on I-27 (US 87) and Woodrow road (approximately 8 miles south of Lubbock). Student registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. Directors' meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the auditions will begin at the conclusion of the meeting.

Please download forms 11 and 15 from the website. These are the Code of Conduct and Medical Release forms your student(s) will need to return along with the Area Audition Fee of $20.00 per student on January 5 prior to auditions. Upon arrival at auditions please submit the completed forms 11, 15, and the Area Audition Fee. Once this paper work is completed please pick up your students' Area Patch. Students may not audition at Area unless they have these forms properly completed and pay the correct fee. Form 15 must be notarized!

Please refer to your Prescribed Music List to ensure your familiarity with the rules and regulations of the AREA audition process, especially concerning percussion. Remember the percussionist will compete in only one round. The student shall enter the room play the scales, rudiments, or tune the timpani; play the slow etude; and then play the fast etude all at one time.

Warm-up Procedure: Warm-ups in audition rooms will be allowed as follows:

  • Snare drum - In 4/4 time, the student may play 2 measures of eighth notes and 2 measures of long rolls.
  • Timpani - students will have one minute, timed by the monitor, to tune the timpani from any source so long as it is audible to the judges and the judges are instructed to count the tuning in assessing a students score. After tuning the student may use the same procedure as the snare drum on one or any combination of timpani.
  • Mallets - Students may play anything for 15 seconds (timed by Monitor).
  • Wind instruments may play anything that can be played in one breath. This will be referred to as the one-breath warm-up.
  • The warm-up room will by located in the practice gym.

Scales: All scales are to be played exactly as written with points deducted for additional or inadequate octaves. While performing scales, mallet percussion will roll all whole notes.

Results will be posted in the commons area and in the director's lounge. Each student certified to State must report back to the registration table to pick up the designated music folder and to complete FORM 14. If you have an All-State student please do not leave until you have been to the registration table.

All-State Housing: At the conclusion of auditions you shall sign your all-state students up for housing at the Emily Morgan. If you sign your student up for housing at the Emily Morgan, you are committed to paying the $135.00 housing fee whether or not the student stays at the Emily Morgan unless you change the reservations before the cutoff date. Housing forms are also available for directors who wish to stay at the Emily Morgan.

Any student not filling out FORM 14 (All-State Housing) the day of the contest will be responsible for making his/her own arrangements. ATSSB must know where the student is staying in San Antonio (we have a form for this as well).

Judging Duties: Please remember that you and your assistants are required to judge or monitor at the auditions. If you are not going to be at the auditions it is your responsibility to send a proxy. Our goal is to have balanced panels representing all four regions; however, some regions lack an ample number of directors so we will use judges from the other regions to fill out the panels.

Concession Stand: The Lubbock Cooper band booster will run a cash concession stand. Please tell your students that no drinks are allowed outside of the commons area.

Should one of your students become ineligible prior to the audition, please contact your region coordinator immediately so that they may certify the alternate from your region to area.

Percussion Equipment: Lubbock Cooper High School will have a xylophone, Marimba, and four timpani for use during the audition. Students who bring their own equipment should unload it in the band hall. The band hall is located on the North East corner of the building.
