Philip Baker
Philip Garrett Baker Age 85, of Midland, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2010, in his home. Private family services were held.
Phil was born on January 11, 1925, in Groesbeck, Texas to Ronald Baker and Julia Ellis Garrett. After graduating from Groesbeck High School on May 26, 1942, he enlisted in the Navy. Phil served as a musician in the Navy band and was stationed in Australia, Manus Island, Los Negros, Hollandia, Biak, Palau, Samar and the Philippines during World War II. Phil was honorably discharged as a Musician Second Class on January 16, 1946. Following his service in the military he attended Sam Houston State University and received his Masters degree in Education. Upon graduation Phil served as the high school band director in Katy, Texas. During his tenure in Katy, he was elected and served as President of the Texas Music Educators Association. Phil went on to be the high school band director at Lufkin High School. After finishing his teaching career, Phil moved to Beaumont, Texas and became the co-owner of Swicegood Music Store.
In 1973, Phil met the love of his life, Katheryn Williams, after a whirlwind romance they married in Santa Fe, New Mexico on December 18, 1973. Phil and Katheryn lived in various places throughout New Mexico, spending 35 years in Santa Fe. Phil was a member of Holy Faith Episcopal Church in Santa Fe. During his time in New Mexico, Phil was involved in a variety of businesses including restaurants, real estate, contracting and management. After retiring in Santa Fe, Phil ultimately moved to Midland, Texas in September of 2008. Survivors include his wife, Katheryn Baker of Midland; two daughters, Cathy Eastham of Midland, and Stephanie Brown of Austin; one son, Stephen Baker and wife Marcia, of Houston; five grandchildren: Keelan Baker of Houston, Melissa Eastham of Midland, Mark Eastham of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Evelyn Brown of Austin and Brandy Taylor of Normangee; and 6 great grandchildren. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Phil's caregivers, Carmen Montanez, Idia Herrera, Dr. David Watkins and Dr. Shylesh Ganta. The family suggests memorials be made to Gifts of Hope at the: Allison Cancer Center, 400 N Garfield ST, Suite 100 Midland, TX 79701.
