Minutes - Spring 2002
ATSSB MEETING
Meeting was held at the TAMUCC Fine Arts Building
Eric Winterbottom called the meeting to order at 8:13am
David Smith moved to accept the minutes as posted on the webpage - 2nd - passed unanimous
Treasurer was not present at time, Mr. Winterbottom moved on to Old Business.
Old Business: couple of committees with reports.
Finance committee - Mr. Winterbottom stated the committee had never met but was planning to during the summer. He asked if anyone else was interested in being added to the committee - there was no reply. The committee will look at what to do with the money ATSSB has to help the students in our region and report back in the Fall.
Jr. High Contest committee - Mr. Ray Garza reported that so far everyone in the committee was in favor of the proposed ATSSB Jr. High UIL Contest but one. The questions were - does any other region have this already - the answer was yes, and would we have a choice concerning which contest we had to attend - the answer was no from Bill Cason. Mr. Winterbottom added that the purpose of the contest was on the basis of scheduling which the small schools get out voted by the large schools. A motion was made by Ray Garza to pursue an ATSSB Jr. High Contest and at the very least better scheduling for small school middle school bands - 2nded - much discussion: Vote 17 for, 8 against - passed by majority.
New Business
Jr. High Try-Out Music: Discussion concerning the possibility of aligning the Jr. High Try-out music similar to the high school. A motion was made by Ray Garza to form a committee to come up with music aligned like the high schools - 2nded - discussion - passed unanimously

Winter Meeting: membership has asked to possibly have a Winter Meeting during the Region Band Clinic/concert in December. A motion was made by Jim Powel - 2nded - discussion. Agreement was to supervise the students during lunch then have a lunch meeting for directors after that. motion passed unanimously
Eddie Benitez proposed having an ATSSB Jazz Band. Eddie made a motion for an ATSSB Jazz Band - 2nded - vote passed unanimously - committee: Eddie, Luis, Dani
Ray Garza read an email from John Ivie concerning small school essential elements.
Eric discussed the ATSSB Video - ATSSB Band Camp for New Directors - Asked for volunteers for ATSSB Summer Conference (non-officers) input from the local director - volunteers Bennie & Dani
Nominations for Region Band clinician were taken - a vote was then taken to place candidates in order - the following is the order of contact for the ATSSB Region 14 Band Clinician:

Bill Cason came in to discuss the middle school contest - He expressed a concern about the loss of flexibility with having our own contest and that he thought the Executive Committee would not allow small school middle school bands to change to another contest if needed. He also explained that he had mentioned the order of performance concern last year, but that it didn't seem to matter to anyone. There was some more discussion.

Ray Garza asked about getting Bill to let him call for judges - Eric said great.
David Smith asked for any errata in PML to let him know by next week.
Ray asked for any changes to be emailed to him concerning the website and email addresses.
