ATSSB Region 18/26 Rules

MS Auditions

1. Auditions will follow the ATSSB Audition procedures as listed on the ATSSB website.  Audition music will come from the region approved list for middle school students.  The middle school coordinator is responsible for the preparation and distribution of the list.

2. Students may use their own music in the audition room.

3. There will be no piccolo, e flat clarinet, alto clarinet, contra clarinet or bass trombone at the middle school tryouts.

4. Students will be allowed to audition on more than one instrument, provided that a separate entry fee is paid for each.  Students are limited to doubling on the following:
       Clarinet and bass clarinet
       Alto, tenor and bari sax
       Euphonium and tuba

Students will receive ONE patch for performing at the clinic/concert.  Students will be automatically placed in the highest band in which they earned a chair.  Students must decide on which instrument they will perform if more than one chair in the same band is earned.

5. In case of conflicts with SAT or ACT testing, students may compete at the region tryouts if they are present by 2:30 p.m. on the day of the tryouts. The student must be physically present. Taping, etc. is not allowed. (School sponsored athletic events may also qualify.)

Exceptions: Will be dealt with at the discretion of the Region Coordinator

6. Five judges should be used for tryouts. An appropriate honorarium of $ 75.00 will be paid to college or university junior/senior music majors, graduate students or private teachers to judge at the tryouts.  The region coordinator will use discretion in placing five (5) qualified personnel to judge individual instruments.   If sixty (60) or more entries are registered the panel may be split into two rooms of three (3) judges each.

7.  Seventh and eighth grade students must tryout at the middle school tryouts.  Sixth graders cannot compete at ATSSB contests.

8. The head band director of each district participating must be present to judge, present his or her ATSSB & TMEA membership card at the auditions or thirty days in advance. Their student(s) will NOT be allowed to audition if the head director is not a PAID member of ATSSB & TMEA with a membership number prior to the tryouts.

9. The head junior high band director must be a paid member of ATSSB. The high school band director's card can not be used unless there is no junior high band director.  Directors selected to judge are required to provide their own replacement if substitution is needed for any reason and are responsible for paying the $75 judges stipend if needed.  A student may be denied permission to try out if that student's director does not attend the auditions.

Exceptions: Will be dealt with at the discretion of the Region Coordinator.

10.  Judges must have their backs to the participants.  At no time should a judge face the studentsduring the audition.  There will be no vocal communication between participant and judge.

11.  The monitor must stand away, OUT OF SIGHT of the participant while participant is playing.

12.  Tempo must be strictly adhered to. Judges WILL NOT change tempo.

13.  Judges are responsible for bringing the results to tabulation.  Under no circumstances should scores be shared with students or other directors prior to the posting of results.

14.  Chairman must make every effort to mail/email results of contest to all directors within one week.

15.  All ATSSB Region 18/26 events have a thirty day entry deadline. All entries will be "online" through the TMEA websight.  Late entries will be allowed and accepted until seven days prior to the audition.  (Entry fees for late entries include a $10.00 charge per student).   No changes of any kind will be allowed after the late entry deadline has expired.

16.  The region chair must make every effort to mail/e-mail results of the contest to all directors within one week of the contest.

19. No person will be paid to judge region band auditions if he or she is a full time band director in the region.

18. The chairperson will specify instructions pertaining to scoring the adjudication forms.

19. Programs should be printed by a dealer or school if at all possible.

20. Students are required to follow a "Student Code of Conduct" for ATSSB events. Directors and or parents should supervise their students.

21. A valve trombone is NOT acceptable at trombone tryouts.

22. An original of the tryout must be available in each tryout room.  It is the audition host's responsibility to provide original book for each room.

23. Fifty (50%) percent of each etude must be heard.  The chromatic and 3 scales will be heard. There is no memorization requirement at any ATSSB audition

24. The middle school region clinic/concert will be held in November or December.

30. At the middle school tryouts all students will be in the designated audition room or waiting area.  All students will be in one room while one student competes to prevent noisy students from running in the halls.  It is the responsibility of the student to be in the audition room at the appropriate time.  Only students and directors are allowed in hallways and audition rooms.  Family members are asked to remain in the warm up area.

31. The warm-up will be the one breath rule. You may play anything you want or can do with one breath. The percussion time limit will be 15 seconds.

32. All middle school percussion auditions will include scales.

33. Only students and directors are allowed in the hallways and audition rooms.  Family members are asked to remain in warm up area.

34.  A director monitor will be assigned for the larger sections (clarinets, flutes) at the high school auditions.

Middle School Region Band Clinic/Concert

1. There will be two middle school region bands performing in concert.  The top band will be called the Symphonic Band and the second band will be called the Concert Band.  Both bands will be of the same size if at all possible.

2.  Students selected for the ATSSB Region Band will be required to attend ALL rehearsals and the concert. Membership will be forfeited if a selected student fails to attend all of his/her rehearsals. Students may be disqualified by leaving audition sites and rehearsals early. Conflicts with other organizations, personal discomforts, personal schedule conflicts. etc..., will not constitute a reasonable excuse for missing any rehearsals or concert. Friday evenings with a UIL ballgame is approved if we are notified IN ADVANCE. Students must attend all-day Saturday and perform in the concert to receive their patch.

3. If a student is ill and does not attend the rehearsals or the concert, they will not receive a patch.

4. If a student becomes ineligible because of grades, the next student will be called by the region coordinator to move up in the section.

5. Alternate students will be called to replace students not in attendance on Friday evening.  Every effort will be made to make directors aware of replacements as soon as possible.

6. Region band music should be selected from library sources and to be distributed the day of the auditions. (The clinician and band organizer will assist in the selection of the music.)

7. The clinic/concert is free to the public.

8. Each student's director (or a qualified proxy) MUST be in attendance at the rehearsals to assist the clinicians and help supervise their students.

4. Students will be allowed to audition on more than one instrument, provided that a separate entry fee is paid for each.  The following doublings are allowed:
             Alto, Bass, Contra Clarinet
             Alto, Tenor, Bari Sax
             Trombone, Bass Trombone
             Baritone, Tuba

Students will receive ONE patch for performing at the clinic/concert.  Students will be automatically placed in the highest band in which they earned a chair.  Students must decide on which instrument they will perform if more than one chair in the same band is earned.
