ATSSB Scholarships

The Jeannie Griffin Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship honors Jeannie Griffin, who passed away on June 20, 2024.  She was the wife of ATSSB Executive Director Kenneth Griffin.  The ATSSB State Board of Directors voted to initiate the scholarship to honor her efforts assisting Mr. Griffin in ATSSB matters over the years.

The amount of the scholarship is $1000.  The 2026 Scholarship recipient will be announced at the ATSSB General Session on February 13, 2026. The recipient of the 2025 Scholarship was announced at the ATSSB General Session on February 14, 2025: Ellie Hale from Liberty High School. She received the award at the ATSSB All-State Band Concert on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Eligible applicants include high school seniors in an ATSSB school who plan to pursue a degree in music education. The band director of the student applying must be a current Active Member of ATSSB. Preference will be granted to students who additionally have choral or piano backgrounds, but all students will be considered.

Applications will be open after September 1, 2026, and must be received by January 9, 2027, for consideration.

The ATSSB Board of Directors or its designee is empowered to decide who is awarded the scholarship each year.

Should the scholarship fund exceed its original goal of presenting a $1000 scholarship per year, ATSSB may adjust or increase the amount awarded as needed.  Should market conditions cause the fund to fall below the award amount, ATSSB can adjust or decrease the amount awarded as needed. At the discretion of the committee, no award may be presented if no candidate meets the committee’s approval.

All funds donated are fully tax-deductible and are under the direct supervision and control of the ATSSB State Board of Directors.

The Bruce Kenner Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship honors Bruce Kenner, who passed away December 10, 2013.  He was a band director in small schools all over Texas for 30 years and a proud member of ATSSB.  His family wanted to continue his passion and love of music, teaching, and helping students for years to come.  They wanted to honor him with this scholarship.

The amount of the scholarship is $1000.

Eligible applicants include high school seniors in an ATSSB school who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music and a teaching certificate with the intention of becoming a band director in a public or private school. The band director of the student applying must be a current Active Member of ATSSB.  The 2026 Scholarship recipient will be announced at the ATSSB General Session on February 13, 2026.  The recipient of the 2025 Scholarship was Justice Gonzalez from Estacado High School in Lubbock.

ATSSB 4-Year All-State Band Scholarship

The amount of the scholarship is $2000 for tuition, fees, books, room and board, or any other goods and services necessary for enrollment in a college, university, trade school, or any educational institution beyond the high school level. Recipients are senior students who make ATSSB All-State all four years in high school, 9-12.

 

ATSSB 3-Year All-State Band Scholarship

The amount of the scholarship is $500 for tuition, fees, books, room and board, or any other goods and services necessary for enrollment in a college, university, trade school, or any educational institution beyond the high school level. Recipients are senior students who make ATSSB All-State three of their four years in high school, 9-12.
