The Bruce Kenner Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship honors Bruce Kenner, who passed away December 10, 2013.  He was a band director in small schools all over Texas for 30 years and a proud member of ATSSB.  His family wanted to continue his passion and love of music, teaching, and helping students for years to come.  They wanted to honor him with this scholarship.

The amount of the scholarship is $1000.

Eligible applicants include high school seniors in an ATSSB school who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music and a teaching certificate with the intention of becoming a band director in a public or private school. The band director of the student applying must be a current Active Member of ATSSB.

The 2024 Scholarship recipient is Anika McNeely, 4A French Horn from Hereford High School. The 2025 Scholarship will be open for applications September 1, 2024.

The ATSSB Board of Directors or its designee is empowered to decide who is awarded the scholarship each year.

All monies donated to the fund are under the direct supervision and control of the ATSSB State Board of Directors.

Should the scholarship fund exceed its original goal of presenting a $1000 scholarship per year, ATSSB may adjust or increase the amount awarded as needed.  Should market conditions cause the fund to fall below the award amount, ATSSB can adjust or decrease the amount awarded as needed. At the discretion of the committee, no award may be presented if no candidate meets the committee’s approval.
